Art dealer Jay Jopling's White Cube gallery first opened in Mayfair in 1993 and quickly gained a reputation for identifying the hottest Young British Artists of the time, being one of hte first galleries to exhibit Tracy Emin, for example. It really took off, though, when it moved to Hoxton Square in East London, putting the official stamp on the area's rising reputation in the art world.
In 2006, he returned to his old stomping ground to open a second White Cube near the original location in Mayfair, but Hoxton Square remains the main event, with exhibitions in the last year by Damien Hirst, Neal Tait, Gilbert & George, Raqib Shaw and Ashley Bickerton. It's free to visit and open 10am-6pm Monday-Saturday. Old Street tube is nearby, as is the new Hoxton stop on the Overground; or there's the 21 35 43 48 55 67 76 141 149 205 214 242 243 271 and 394 buses.
