Go for a drink and marvel at the décor at the Commercial Tavern
There are two types of pub in Shoreditch these days: old-style boozers, which are ever fewer & further between; and trendy bars, which combine high prices and moody staff with snazzy decor. Somehow, the Commercial Tavern manages to offer the best of both worlds. A traditional pub in many ways – no food, no TVs blaring Sky Sports – it scores hipster points for its dazzling decor, which includes a wall covered in jigsaw pieces, both traditional and ultra-arty chandeliers, and mounted deer heads by the bucketload. It’s been described as ‘a flea market on acid’, which seems pretty apt. Drinks are reasonable for the area, but the emphasis is on real ale (in a proper tankard) rather than lager, which may be what keeps it from getting too full of after-work City drinkers. It’s open only till 11, so don’t get there too late. Liverpool St/Aldgate East.
